A. Dear Bride-to-be: It is wonderful that you want to DIY your wedding invitations – they are a lot of fun. Here is some advice on how you can go about making your own invitations.

Make Samples
Start out by test driving the whole DIY invitations project. Get ideas and inspiration from your local Arts and Crafts stores and Paper stores. Do not buy paper in bulk until you are a 100% sure that you want to go the DIY route. A lot of stores would not let you return the paper because of restocking issues. You should try to produce at least a couple of different samples before you pick the final invitation. You can have your fiance and family vote on the different samples.
Decide on number of invitations and budget
Before you start DIYing your invitations you would need to have your guestlist complete. Count the number of invitations based on the number of individuals and families. You should always make 25 – 50 extra invitations. Based on the number of invitations, come up with a realistic budget for the project. The cost of the invitations will be a function of the amount spent on supplies and the value of your time.

Time and Effort
So you already have a sample that you are going to base your invitation off of. Now you should estimate the time it will take you to make each invitation. Decide how much time you can devote to your DIY project each day. For example, You want to make 200 invitations, it takes you half hour to do one invitation, and you can spend one hour a day doing it – In this situation you will finish only 2 invitations per day and will need 100 days to finish all of them. This means that you will need to start DIYing your invitations three and a half months before you plan on mailing them. Make sure you estimate the time to finish the project correctly, and set realistic goals for yourself.
Get help
Lastly, if you are feeling overwhelmed, always ask your bridesmaids, friends, and family for help. Have a DIY party at your house and have your girlfriends help you out with your DIY invitations.
